The Borderlands Duo is a Zimbabwean musical collaboration between Mary Anibal and Othnell “Mangoma” Moyo, two dynamic artists whose work bridges tradition and contemporary expression through sound, storytelling, and performance. Rooted in the cultural landscapes of the Zambezi Valley and the border regions between Zimbabwe and Mozambique, their music draws deeply from indigenous knowledge systems while engaging audiences in conversations about identity, migration, and belonging.

 

The name Borderlands Duo reflects both geography and philosophy. Mary Anibal and Othnell Moyo come from communities shaped by the Zimbabwe and Mozambique border, where cultures, languages, and musical traditions intersect and evolve. This meeting point informs their artistic approach, one that embraces fluidity, exchange, and the movement of ideas across geographical and cultural boundaries. Their work is grounded in traditional forms such as Mbira, Ngoma, Valimba, Uhadi, Chitende, and mouth bows, which they reinterpret through contemporary performance practices.

 

Both artists are accomplished musicians and cultural practitioners in their own right. They began working together through the ensemble Music According to Percussion and later collaborated as session musicians across a range of projects before formally establishing Borderlands Duo in December 2024. Their synergy lies in their versatility. Both are multi instrumentalists with powerful vocal ranges, capable of shifting roles seamlessly within a performance. This dynamic interplay allows them to create richly layered soundscapes that are intimate, energetic, and expansive.

 

Their work is deeply narrative driven. Through projects such as From Village to Town and Back to the Village, they explore the lived realities of migration, tracing journeys from rural communities to urban centers and back again. Their performances are immersive and participatory, often dissolving the boundaries between artist and audience. By incorporating spatial staging and inviting audience interaction, they create shared experiences that reflect the communal nature of the traditions from which they draw.

 

Beyond performance, Borderlands Duo is committed to cultural preservation, education, research, and community engagement. Their work extends into workshops, residencies, collaborations, and community based projects that seek to revitalize indigenous musical practices and position them as relevant tools for contemporary life.

 

Both Mary Anibal and Othnell Moyo were nominated for Zimbabwe Music Awards in 2023, with Mary Anibal receiving the award. Their growing body of work continues to demonstrate their versatility, musical depth, and commitment to Zimbabwean cultural expression.

 

Borderlands Duo represents a new generation of African artists who honor the past while actively shaping the future.
